I broke and finally decided to review the viral six day star blanket pattern by Betty McKnit. If you were to look up crochet blankets on any social media, I’m positive that this blanket would be one of the first blankets you would see. I’ve wanted to try this blanket out for a long time, but I have had trouble in finishing it, as it is a lot of counting and counting can be tedious. Most of the time, when I crochet, I make stitches and then count before I move on.
The reason that I really wanted to get this blanket done is because Christmas is coming up, and I want to gift this to a loved one on Christmas.
I used Lion Brand Mandala Light Weight Acrylic yarn that I bought from my local Joann. I used the colorway “Sasquatch”. These cakes are 1181 yards, but they are also thinner than what I would typically use for a blanket like this. With that in mind, I bought four cakes, wondering if I would need all four to finish this blanket. Honestly, having never made it before, I wasn’t sure exactly how much yarn I would need to make a (at least) throw sized blanket. I used my Clover 5mm hook.

lets Get Started!
I decided to start with one cake of Mandala, after all, I didn’t really know how how big of a blanket this yarn would make with just one cake. Excited, I started up on this blanket, intended to be a gift for someone I know. As I got further and further into the project, the more I wanted to keep it for myself. After all, I’ve never made myself a blanket, and I did say in my “Why I Love my Profession” post that I was wanting a cozy blanket for my desk, but I was intending to hand knit a big chunky blanket out of Bernat Blanket for it. We’ll see!
Time to Crochet!!
I started with a center pull, which made the very center, and largest part of the blanket burnt orange. Here is a picture of my cake of yarn!
I was so so so excited to start that once I got going, I didn’t want to stop. Early into my six day star blanket, I wasn’t sure how far this cake would get me, or even specifically how far the orange would get me, but I was determined to get to the next color. One of my favorite parts of this project was seeing the colors change. Naturally, I started this project around 8 at night, meaning I only got about one hour of work in, so there was only so much I would do for the first night.
The First Color!
This was only about 5 rows into the project. I started off pretty slow, it was dark and I couldn’t see too well, but I got a decent amount done. So far, I was loving the yarn! It was easy to work with and it showed so much definition. This was going wonderfully! So far, the set up rounds were easy to follow, and I was having so much fun. This pattern also helped me to understand more about shaping flat pieces!
So far, The six day star blanket was working up very nicely, and I was sure to be consistent with the way I placed my stitches.
Here’s the blanket when I’ve finished the set up rows and the first seven row repeat. I was in the car in this photo on the way to our nearest Buc-ee’s, I had never been, and my fiancé, Hunter, had been the night before, so he decided to bring me! That meant I had about a two hour car ride to work on my blanket! I took this photo about an hour in. Car rides are the only semi-undivided time I have to focus on crocheting, so I was super excited! By the time we were on our way back, it was too dark to see, so I got to talk to Hunter and listen to music on the way home!
At this point, I was getting super excited about how big this blanket would be with only one cake! I had only done the first repeat, and things were going great!! I was really getting into a groove now, and the blanket was turning out beautiful. Watching for the color change was so exciting, even though I didn’t quite get there that same day.
The First color Change
The next day was a Monday, and I was excited to get back to my work schedule.
Here we are! I finally got to the first color change. This pattern has been wonderful so far. I was able to read it well, and I didn’t have to frog much, everything fell right into place! I actually took the photo of this blanket on the backside of the blanket to show you how good it looks from the back as well! At this point, my edges were curling a little bit, but I chose to keep going rather than frog a little and change hook size. Around this time, I also realized that there are two shades of orange in the center of the blanket. It isn’t as noticeable in person, believe it or not!
I was so excited about the color change, that I just wanted to keep going! This six day star blanket was quickly becoming a project I enjoyed a lot. I had also figured out a faster way to count my stitches, so I was spending less time counting and recounting, and more time crocheting! From here, the color changes came so fast! I wasn’t sure how much I liked the green mushed up against that powerful orange, but I kept kept going anyway. I was sure it would grow on me. Right..?
The Second Color CHange in my six day star blanket!
We’re blowing through color changes now! The green only lasted about 5 or 6 rows before moving to the next. Between the colors, there is a small strip of transitional color. You don’t see them much in the long run, but they are nice on the eye. I know you can’t tell from the photo, but I very much liked that the color change fell on the very last stitch of a cluster round. The blue comes in perfectly. It is beautiful.
It was around this point that I was debating keeping this six day star blanket for myself instead of gifting it. I can not explain how much I love how this blanket is working up. I would love to redo this blanket in several different colors, and I’m sure I will make one specifically for myself in the future! The green still wasn’t my favorite, but layered between the orange and the blue, it was starting to grow on me.
One of my favorite things, about this blanket is how mindless it can be. I know the pattern, so all I do is check the link for numbers every once in a while, and I’m good! If you find a mistake in your blanket, it’s easy to correct in the mistakes in your work. I worked with stacked single crochets instead of chain 3s at the beginning of my rows, so it is more seamless for me, but if you really look, you can see the seam.
The Third + fourth Color CHange
At this point in the six day star blanket, I was nearing the end of my cake, and my blanket wasn’t as big as I was hoping, so I know that I will need to add at least one more cake for this blanket, but I will have to get to that later!
I didn’t take a picture when I reached the dark blue, so that would be the third color change! And that color change really helped! At this point, I LOVE all of the colors. The two blues, the orange, even the green! All of it is beautiful. I love the yarn, I love the colors, I love the pattern. This blanket is genuinely a perfectly come together project. The fourth color change is the dark purple, which also really tied the whole project together. The purple is the perfect next color. Around this time I wound up my yarn so it was easier to work with.
Pro tip, use the yarn facts paper or a small piece of paper in the center of your cake, as long as you plan on pulling from the outside. I used an index card with all of the details of the project. I included the yarn brand and colorway, the hook brand and size I was using. Had I came back to this pattern after a while, I would have had all of my info right there!!
The fifth and final color change, for now, on my six day star blanket!
Here is today’s final color change! The purple turned a purplish-pink color. Now, I wasn’t quite sure about this change. The pink was a weird color choice for me personally. All of the other colors were so dark, yet bright and vibrant. The pink was just so different, that I wasn’t sure if I would like it.
Looking at it now, I think the pink compliments everything well. It is still a bit bright for everything else, but it’s also beautiful. It all came together so wonderfully! Now, with using only one cake, this blanket is only really lap sized, but I also have 3 more cakes, so something tells me this won’t be the last time we see this blanket! I totally recommend this pattern for people who crochet, but can’t typically sit through blankets, this pattern is wonderful. Here is a link directly to the pattern by Betty McKnit!
This blanket was so much fun to make and watch grow. I am so excited to keep going on this blanket, but first, I plan to take a break from the blankets, and work on something a little more 3D. See you next week!
